Five double rooms, all en-suite and with private entrances, lead into the colourful garden behind the imposing Edwardian "Feather Baron" mansion that is home to hosts Roy and Marietha van Hoffen. Three rooms are in the converted barn and stable of the original property, and two are newly built. All of them boast space, privacy and comfort, plus the use of a large pool and lapa with braai facilities.

A lounge for the exclusive use of guests is well stocked with books of local interest, a television, generous fireplace, and an honesty bar. It is the venue for many late-night conversations between travellers and their hosts. "We interact with our guests a great deal," says Roy. He and Marietha advise people on what to do in the area, and will even convey them there when necessary.

However, Avondrust’s location in the centre of town means that guests in this Graaff-Reinet accommodation can walk anywhere they wish. That is, if they wish to leave the peaceful formal garden which is so easy to sit in. Marietha’s mother, Rosa, is responsible for the large grounds which she fills with colour planted formally. A professional landscaper has labelled the garden a "fruit salad" but Rosa is unrepentant. "I love colour," she says. And the garden clearly loves her for it grows heartily, providing a sanctuary for all who rest there.

Weary travellers are served tea and home-baked goodies there on arrival, and breakfast is laid in the garden when the weather is good. The full South African breakfast, which appears frequently in visitors’ book comments, features homemade bread, muffins and scones that people write home about.

Then, when they arrive back home, guests write to Avondrust. The Van Hoffens receive quantities of mail from guests who have become friends after spending time in this Graaff-Reinet guest house.
