If you're hankering for the hotel lounge chic last seen in 1970s Hollywood romantic dramas and a raft of retro jeans commercials, this is the place for you. It's not efficient enough to be classed as a chain hotel, nor scruffy enough for a stay to be discouraged. Instead, it's a time-warp of a place, with nondescript rooms, pool tables, a sunken bar and a (working) bingo hall. These combine to recall boycott-era South Africa, when domestic travel boomed and an aesthetic developed: tuxedoed porters dashed around importantly and adults got respite from their kids in 'The Green Room'. Many people use the hotel as a convenient beach or business base, favouring its comfortable rooms and excellent location over accommodation with more character. We just hung around in the lounge, ordered a martini and prayed for Ali MacGraw to saunter in wearing tan leather boots.
