 Accommodation

In the heart of this beautiful area, between White River and Hazyview, a graceful country inn has been established on the edge of the escarpment, just four hours’ drive from Gauteng.

Highgrove is ideally situated at 1000 metres above sea level and so avoids the really intense heat and humidity that can sometimes be experienced in Mpumalanga during the summer months. Around the turn of the last century it was a chilli farm, hacked from the untamed bushveld and lovingly nurtured by one Colonel Wicks, whose ghostly presence may still be felt in the historical main buildings on still evenings.

Today the crops that grow in the lush soil are avocados and macadamia nuts as well as our very own organic vegetable garden - many of our signature dishes use these divine, fresh ingredients during harvesting.

The old farmstead has been masterfully restored and transformed into an elegant country lodge, with eight delightful garden suites, and the surroundings landscaped into gardens perfumed by nature’s ambrosial scents. Two rows of aged jacaranda trees, which meet in a high arch, provide an enchanting entrance avenue.

A fine collection of antiques and Persian carpets adorns the reception rooms, warmed by crackling fires when winter’s chill sets in. To further pander to the senses, the aromas of good living fill the air with fragrances of flowers, herbs, cooking and fine wines.

Pause a while in the intimate bar or on the spacious colonial verandah before entering the romantic, elegant candle-lit dining room with the gleam of silver, for a gourmet experience. Each meal is memorable, as specialities of the house are exquisitely created and served with South Africa’s finest wines. Old world charm and courtesy are the order of the day in this gracious country home from home. Intimate weddings and and special occasions are well catered for.
