The building today houses the Isipingo Municipality Shaka’s Rock It is said that this is the rock that Shaka sat on while he drank from the river and declared that the water was sweet. Hence the same of Amanzimtoti – sweet water. The rock can be found in Illanda Wilds. NATURE Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary A captivating self guided trail (30 min) winds through the forest. There are three hides from which to see many of the more than 150 species of bird which visit the large expanse of open water in the sanctuary. The charming tea garden overlooks the lake where a variety of aquatic birds can be seen. Illanda Wilds The Illanda Wilds area has three self guided trails winding through riverine forest and thornveld. There are steep cliffs where the river has cut through dwyka tillite, as well as many coastal forest trees and fine specimens of the Natal Elm (Celtis mild braedii). Abundant bird and animal life. Umbogavango Nature Reserve Situated to the north of Amanzimtoti, the reserve offers excellent bird watching.
